Google Drawing: Fault Types and Forces

In this EdTech Earth Science activity students will use Google Drawings to create an image that demonstrates the three main types of earthquake faults, Transverse, Normal, and Reverse. They will find 2 real images of each type of fault. They will draw arrows pointing in the direction that the forces, shear, compression, and tension are moving on each image. They will also find and add an actual diagram of each type of fault. Finally students will label the hanging wall and footwall on each image except for the transverse/strike slip. Students will have a rubric by which they can follow to...Click for Rest of Tech Tip

Earth Science: Famous Volcanoes Research Activity

In this web research activity students will research 14 volcanoes via the internet. All of these volcanoes are famous for either their size of eruption or the continuous eruptions that they have. They are famous for causing large tsunamis, huge pyroclastic flows and lahars, as well as some that might not be so dangerous but have flowed continuously for many years. Students will enhance their geography knowledge by plotting the volcanoes locations on a plate tectonic map. They will find out when the last eruption occurred. Students will decide whether the volcano is sitting on a subduction...Click for Rest of Tech Tip

Understanding Earthquakes through Analyzing and Plotting Earthquake Data

In this Earth Science activity students will gain a deeper understanding of the following Vocabulary: seismologist, seismograph, seismogram, epicenter, P-Wave, S-Wave, Wave Amplitude, Magnitude, and Richter/Moment Magnitude Scale. Students will create a digital spreadsheet that will help them calculate data they gathered by looking at actual seismograms. Technology is incorporated throughout the lesson. Students will determine the P and S wave arrival times and use that information to triangulate the location of an epicenter in Arizona. Students will use Google Earth or maps to see what is...Click for Rest of Tech Tip

A tribute to Snow Days

This music video might be a great way to start a Professional Development meeting.  In this video, a third-grade teacher sings about her wish for having a snow day.  It is sung to the tune of "Hello."  If you are a teacher, especially in the elementary schools then she nails our thoughts on the head with this song.  It is very well done and funny.Click for Rest of Tech Tip

Earth Science: What's in that Mineral Google Search Activity

This Google search activity allows students to go to the internet to search for specific minerals and then to use the Periodic Table to discover what the mineral is made out of.  This activity usually takes a full 50 minutes for the students to find all of the answers.  I usually discuss the answers at the beginning of class on the following day so that they have as much time as needed to find the answers.

During the discussion, I discuss how cool it is that mankind has been able to use the different elements to its benefit.  There are many uses of these minerals that I did not list...Click for Rest of Tech Tip

Earth Science Lab: Grow and observe salt crystal formation

In this lab students will observe the formation of salt crystals.  Adding food coloring to your solution can also act as a chemical impurity so that you can have a discussion as to how minerals such as quartz get colored.  Also students will see and be able to discuss mineral evaporation and precipitation.

  • Materials needed:

    • Salt, hot plates, stirring rods, plates (preferably paper), water.

  • I group the students in groups of 3 to 4 as I am limited to space for the amount of plates.

  • This experiment works best if the
