Classroom Line Plots

Students will measure common objects to the nearest inch and then input them in a table.  Or you can just use the table with common objects.  Once they have the data, they will use a number line divided into quarters and create a line plot.  When finished they will answer some questions based on the line plot.  Answer key is provided.

3 Digit Addition Practice Tool

This math tool is a fantastic way for students to practice their three-digit addition skills. With just the click of a button, two random three-digit numbers are generated, providing students with a new set of problems each time they use it. The tool is smartboard friendly, with large buttons that make it easy to use for students of all ages. With regular practice, students will become more confident in their addition abilities, improving their math skills overall.

Students Learn to Read a Ruler with this Game

When my 3rd-grade students are learning to read measurements to the quarter inch, I use this game.  Most kids get really into it.  As students get the measurement correct, the timer goes faster and faster.  You can change the settings to display rulers that measure just the inch, half inch, quarter inch, sixteenth inch, thirty-two seconds of an inch, and even sixty-four seconds of an inch.

Measure Distance using the Metric System while flying pens across the classroom

This science lab can be used in any of the science disciplines because it is going to help students learn how to read a meter tape. Students will learn what the Magnus Effect is and how to demonstrate the Magnus Effect by "flying" a hollowed-out "Bic" pen across the classroom. Students will also learn how to create a spreadsheet and then add a formula that will automatically calculate the average of their pen flight distances. I use this lab at the beginning of the year to get students excited about science as well.
