Equivalent Fractions • Pie Builder is an interactive fraction game that strengthens students’ understanding of equivalent fractions by combining visual modeling, student choice, and quick feedback.
Students are given a target fraction (like 2/3) displayed on a “Target Pie.” Their challenge is to create an equivalent fraction by choosing a different number of slices for their own pie (up to 48 slices), then clicking wedges to shade the correct amount. They can type their fraction answer (e.g., 4/6) or use the “Use Shading” button to automatically fill the numerator/denominator based on what they shaded. The program checks that the student’s fraction is truly equivalent—and also prevents an easy shortcut by not allowing the exact same fraction as the target.
The game runs in a timed round with score, correct count, and a saved high score, encouraging students to improve with repeated play. After a correct answer, a fun bonus feature unlocks: a spinner mini-game on the target pie that awards extra points based on where it lands, keeping students engaged while reinforcing fraction partitions. With clean visuals, meaningful constraints, and immediate feedback, this activity is ideal for math centers, small groups, intervention, or independent practice focused on building real fraction equivalence understanding.
