Area & Perimeter Tic-Tac-Toe is an interactive, two-player math game that blends classic tic-tac-toe strategy with Grade 3 measurement concepts aligned to 3.MD.C.8. Players take turns selecting an empty square on a 3×3 board, then must correctly solve an area and/or perimeter challenge to earn the right to place their X or O. If a player answers incorrectly (or runs out of time), they do not place a mark and the turn passes to the other player.

The game runs as a 10-round match with a 10-minute overall timer and a 2-minute timer per question, encouraging both accuracy and efficient problem-solving. Question types rotate randomly to build flexible understanding, including:

  • Finding a missing side length using area (area = length × width)
  • Using area to determine a missing dimension and then calculating perimeter
  • Comparing rectangles with the same perimeter to identify the smallest area
  • Identifying rectangles with the same area but different perimeters
  • Selecting a rectangle that matches both a given area and perimeter

To support different learning styles, the resource includes a Drawing Workstation (a built-in digital canvas) where students can sketch rectangles, label side lengths, and create area models. Some questions also generate an on-screen visual model of a rectangle to help students connect the computation to a concrete representation. In addition, a “Read” button uses text-to-speech so students can hear the question aloud, improving accessibility and supporting developing readers.

This game is ideal for partner practice, math centers, intervention groups, or review sessions where students can strengthen conceptual understanding of how area and perimeter relate, while staying engaged through friendly competition and repeated, varied practice.
