Oceanography

This TEDed video shows just how big the ocean is.  It does a great job at putting the sheer size of the ocean into perspective.

This video covers a range of key concepts that are essential for any unit on energy, including geothermal energy, solar energy, convection, the biosphere, combustion, respiration, fossil fuels, solar cells, and renewable resources. Through the use of clear explanations and stunning visuals, viewers will gain a deep understanding of the different types of energy and their impact on our planet. This video is a valuable resource for educators and students alike, as it can be used to supplement lessons on energy for a wide range of grade levels.

In this Study Jam video, students will learn about the water cycle.  The vocabulary used in the video is precipitation, evaporation, condensation, humid, transpiration, clouds, dense, and water vapor. 

This video does a great job discussing and showing the processes of coastal beach and rock formations.  The video also discusses a little bit about ocean wave formation.

When discussing tsunamis it is good to discuss that some tsunamis can reach hundreds of feet high if the conditions are right.  In 1958 that is what happened after a landslide generated a 1720 foot tsunami.  This video shows a scientist discussing evidence found that Lituya Bay has had other tsunamis this big in the past.

This is an edited version of the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami.  This video does a great job telling the story of the tsunami from the video of those who survived.  Make sure you have tissues because there are some sad parts.  I edited out any corpses that were videoed as well as any usage of bad language and too close of view of people wearing inappropriate clothing that might get teachers in trouble.  I did my best to make this video classroom-friendly.

This is an entertaining newscast that interviews scientists and what they have to say about the movie San Andreas.  I show this video in class to demonstrate reality vs Hollywood.

EarthScience.xyz is a website that teaches earth science to students.  It is a step by step book containing all the information needed to learn about the Earth.  Teachers can have access to all the labs and assignments that are taught at Snowflake High School.  There are tons of high-quality graphics, animation, and videos that will make presenting geology, meteorology, oceanography, paleontology and astronomy to students engaging and fun.

This file includes all of the assignments, instructions, lab notes, labs, worksheets, and presentations to teach the first chapter of Earth science. Students will get the opportunity to explore the scientific method through both hands-on and digital labs.

In this activity, students will briefly examine 10 fields/disciplines of Geology: hydrology, volcanology, mineralogy, paleontology, stratigraphy, seismology, petrology, geomorphology, geochemistry, and crystallography. They will pick one of those disciplines that they find interesting and find a job description in that field. Students will also find a salary range and what type of education they would need in order to obtain that salary. When students are finished, they should have an idea that there are money and great careers as a scientist in the field of Geology.
