Current USGS Significant Worldwide Earthquake Investigation

In this Earth Science Earthquake activity, students will explore the USGS current earthquake website. Students will understand what is to be found on the USGS Earthquake website. They will discover how many earthquakes have occurred recently. Students will gain an understanding of what the Mercalli Intensity Scale is used for. Students will discover the 5 largest recent earthquakes that have occurred around the world. They will gain a better understanding of geography as well by using maps and map scales to determine distances from an earthquake epicenter.

Cave Formations and Information Investigation Activity

In this assignment students will find images of the most common formations found in caves: helictites, stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone, cave popcorn, soda straws, draperies, cave bacon, columns, and boxwork They will be assigned a specific cave from a list of 18 and answer 8 out of many questions about the cave. Students get to choose the open-ended questions from a list or create their own questions. This assignment is designed to generate interest in visiting the many caves throughout the world. Many of the caves in the list are found right here in the United States.

3rd Grade Multiples of 10 Dice Game

In this activity, students will partner up. They will each get a single die. They will record their first roll on the worksheet. Then roll it again and multiply it by 10. Next, they will find the product of their first roll times their 2nd roll which was multiplied by 10. Finally, students will find the sum of all of their products. The player with the highest sum wins the game.

3rd Grade Understanding Parts of Fractions

This fractions worksheet is designed to reinforce the concept that fractions are shapes or objects divided into equal parts or pieces. Students are first asked what each part of a divided shape is equal to. Then they have to make a fraction based on the shaded area. Next students are presented with shapes that are divided into 1/5 and have to decide whether or not the shape was evenly divided. Finally, they are given 2-word problems designed to make a student think about what each part of a divided shape or object actually means.

A digital study of Awesome Landforms

In this one-day activity students will read and learn about the different types of landforms that are out there. They will then, as groups, create a Google Doc and create a table within it. They will find examples, describe the origins, and find an image that represents, coastal plains, interior plains, folded mountains, upwarped mountains, fault-block mountains, volcanic mountains, and plateaus. After they are done students will share some unique discoveries that they have made with the class and compare them with their discoveries with those of others.
