Understanding Mass Movement Erosion Types

Image

mass movement image

In this activity students will discover information about the four mass movement types: creeps, slides, falls, flows, slumps. They will discover the most costly and deadliest landslides in the USA. You can either print out copies for students or have them use Google Docs. Other words discussed are erosion, deposition, and lahar. Students will research what natural and human events can trigger landslides. They will also research methods that humans are currently using to try and prevent mass movement.

Sediment Permeability and Porosity Lab

Image

porosity and permeability lab

In this lab, students will design and experiment to determine which type of sediment is the most permeable and the most porous. This very open to a student's design. The teacher should give little to no help with this experiment. I use this lab as an assessment of a group's ability to design and experiment and come up with a statement of conclusion. I am looking for their ability to use time wisely, set up an experiment, gather data, practice safe lab techniques, and use variables correctly. Teacher reflection and procedures are included.

Water Features Found In Yellowstone National Park Presentation

Image

yellowstone project image

In this assignment, students will research 6 water features that are found in Yellowstone National Park. They will find three images and three facts about each feature. They will create a 7 slide presentation. Attached is a paper that contains a grading rubric and the student instructions for this assignment. Water features researched are Hot springs, travertine terraces, mud pots, geysers, fumaroles, and thermophiles.

Earth Science: Evidence of Volcanic Past

Image

Extinct Volcanoes Geology

In this Earth Science/Geology assignment, students will gain a better understanding of igneous rock formation and the evidence left behind when a volcano goes extinct. Students will label a diagram that contains: a batholith, a crater, dikes, a laccolith, a lava flow, sills, a stock, a vent, and a volcanic neck.

Students will reinforce the concept of intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks by placing representations of relative crystal sizes on the diagram.

Interactive and Review Reading Log: Friday to Thursday

Image

Reading log image

This is an activity-based reading log.

My idea behind this type of reading log is threefold.

1. Keep track of the books that students are reading and the time they are reading each day.

2. Practice a skill-based on reading, writing, and science standards as well as a review of previously taught standards to add more practice.

Prefixes: Changing the Meaning of Words Bingo Game

Image

Prefixes bingo image

This prefix Bingo game can be played in two ways. First, by giving a clue such as "to apply again" and then students will place their bingo chip over the answer "reapply." It can also be played in reverse as I have included a whole new set of cards if that is how you would like to play it. In this case, the teacher would call off "reapply" and the students would search for "to apply again." There are 30 completely different cards for each method of playing. Also included is the call sheet with checkboxes to keep track of what was called or not.

Understanding how to Interpret Weather Station Models

Image

Weather Station Models Image

In this self-guided activity, students will gain an understanding of how to interpret basic to advanced weather station models. They will read barometric pressure examples and interpret whether the barometer is rising or dropping. Students will learn what many of the symbols on station models represent. Students will take real station model data from 2017 from around the country. They will have to interpret the temperature, dew point, wind speed in knots, wind direction, millibar pressure, change in MB, sky cover, visibility, and precipitation.
